North Shore Oahu & The Triple Crown of Surf

Long considered the best stretch of surf breaks on earth, the North Shore surf area encompasses six miles of coastline on the northwestern tip of Oahu from Hale’iwa to Sunset Beach. Every November and December the top 44 surfers in world rankings vie to be named best all-around surfer in the world. Each of the three invitation-only competitions has a separate winner. The surfer who excels in all three contests, racking up the most points overall, wins the Vans Triple Crown title.

Hale’iwa Ali’i Beach Park
The Triple Crown begins with the high-performance waves at Hale’iwa. Though lesser known than the other two surf breaks – it is the perfect wave for trick riding. Here, you’ll see contestants execute sharp cutbacks, barrel rides, and a crescendo of floaters (balancing on the top of the cresting wave).

Sunset
Beach
This contest showcases guts and bravado. The competition is held when the swell of the wave is at 8 to 12 feet. Sunset gets the heaviest surf because it’s the exposed point on the northwestern tip of Oahu. Surfers describe the waves here as “mountains in motion.”

Banzai Pipeline
Clearly the most widely known of the surf breaks – the Pipeline looks like a 10-foot high hollow tube of water. Spectators on the shore watch in awe as the competitors emerge from the white mist unscathed.

Waimea Valley Audubon Center
Waimea gets a lot of press for its big waves, but the valley itself is a newsmaker and an ecological treasure. The National Audubon Society is working to conserve and restore its crucial habitats. Follow Kamananui Stream up the valley through 1,800 acres of gardens. The botanical collections include over 5000 species of tropical flora and it’s the best place on the island to see native species of birds. Archaeological sites suggest this area was an important spiritual center. Bring your swimming suit along – you can end your hike with a dip in the swimming pond formed by Waihi Falls.
